I have always loved vector art, cartoony illustrations (I still watch cartoons!) and the like, so last year I set out to try making one of a photo of myself. The photo I used is on the about page. I followed a vector portrait tutorial on the net; it was one of Jack Nicholson from the Shining but the site I had bookmarked is closed and I can’t seem to find the tutorial anywhere else.

Constructive criticism always appreciated. =)

One thing I painfully learnt was that I started out too small. The size you see there is the size I made it in. Making detailed parts like the eyes was difficult. A mistake I’ll not make again, that’s for sure!

I mentioned before that I got Adobe Photoshop Elements with my Wacom Bamboo Fun (A5) graphics tablet. Art Rage was also among the software that came with it and, of course, I had to try it out! It’s so much fun! It really does feel like real paint even if it is digital. Smear around with the paint, make it goo-ey or glittery or watercolour-ey. Pile it on in layers! Paint on smooth paper, coarse paper; there are a lot of options. =D It is nothing like Photoshop or PaintShop Pro or any other graphics program I have used.

My daughter really enjoys messing around with Art Rage and she has probably used it more than I have. I have so many projects to distract myself with as it is but I did manage to finish a painting. It kind of had it’s own life. I didn’t think about what I wanted to paint before-hand. I called it “Abendsonne” (Evening Sun) after it was done because that was what it felt like to me.

Click on the pic to see a larger version and if you like, tell me what you think. =)

I made this in January for my daughter. It is actually the front of an invitation card I designed for her birthday. She really wanted it as desktop wallpaper and as I had made it at 300 ppi and pretty huge, that was no problem. There are 4 desktop sizes to choose from. We use all here! Click on the size you need and then right-click the image and set it as your background image.

I made this as the background for the first version of this site which I called “Fairy Tales”and since I still like this, I thought I’d put it up. Maybe someone else likes this grungey kind of thing, too.

Click on the size you need and then right-click the image and set it as your background image.

This was made last year with Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 when I first got that program with my graphics tablet. I try everything at least once and this was the result. =D
